Abstract: In recent times the debate regarding the future of Europe seems to be intensifying, raising questions about the direction of European integration and the functioning of the integration organization. The challenges of the 21st century, such as mass migration, the aspirations of Turkey and the predominantly Islamic states in the Western Balkans to join, the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union, or the proceedings initiated under Article 7 of the Treaty on European Union due to violations of EU fundamental values by certain member states, all raise the question of what the goal of the European integration process is, what its real foundation is, and how it is possible to sustain this process.

The possibilities of the expansion of the European Union are a key issue and a determining factor in European integration and geopolitical processes. In my opinion, the future of Europe is greatly influenced by how the EU expansion policy unfolds, where the Western Balkans holds a prominent place, and the future and development directions of Europe are determined by the ongoing expansion processes. In my study, I seek answers to these questions.
