Abstract: Because the immune system is important in defending humans against alien substances (microorganisms), it must be protected. To function efficiently, immune system cells significantly rely on cell-cell communication, notably through membrane-bound receptors. Since cell membranes contain polyunsaturated fatty acids, peroxidation by reactive oxygen species (ROS) damages the membrane, resulting in a loss of integrity, altered fluidity, and changes to intracellular signalling and cell function.
