Abstract: This article describes an automation framework which utilizes Postman collections and Jenkins pipeline hooks to validate RESTful microservices as payloads. The framework was derived after the Charter Communications backend microservices architecture and is identifying if API responses are valid schema, consistent with business rules, and correct for provided context during a continuous integration (CI) build. In lieu of field by field validations of multiple services JSON payloads, Postman’s pre-request and test script capabilities are used, and Jenkins hooks in response to microservice build/deployment events provide a mechanism to automate Postman runs in CI which self-reports and timestamps payload violations. And, as a side note, the artifact-based tests can be version controlled, environment parameterizable, and automated result publishing provide for agile issue triage. Also, this has provided the ability to capture test artifacts quickly for the key microservices, has reduced manual validation, and provides automated notifications of changes in data structure when deploying CI code rapidly.
