Financial Literacy among College Students in Nagaland: An Empirical study

Abstract: Enhancing the financial literacy of college students is essential in equipping them with skills necessary for making informed financial decisions and sustainable economic participation. College students are at a stage where they will soon be required to make financial decisions on their own as they enter the workforce which will not only impact their individual lives but also the economy of the society. Financial literacy has an important role in this but little evidence exists on the financial preparedness of this group of college students, especially in the context of the Northeast region or India in general. This study aims to examine the financial literacy level of college students and their variation across different domains and demographic factors. Descriptive statistics and comparative tests were conducted on data collected from 297 respondents using a structured questionnaire. Findings reveal a low level of overall financial literacy with concerning areas such as inflation, credit card knowledge, saving & investment and risk diversification. In addition, male students were found to be more financially literate in comparison to female students. Source of income was also found to be a significant predictor of financial literacy.
